Yann Martel wrote "The Life of Pi," which is on a lot of book club lists these days. My wife really enjoyed it, but I haven't had the chance to read it yet.
David James Duncan wrote "The Brothers K" and "The River Why." The former is highly recommended (especially if you like baseball, but even if you don't). The latter was a bit more challenging but ultimately rewarding. The author is an academic lefty moonbat, but I wouldn't hold that against him, at least with The Brothers K.
