SF Babes Weekly Poll (Odd Women Out)
This week's poll is yet another variation on the Star Trek theme.
Though the odd-numbered Trek films are commonly considered inferior to the even-numbered ones (at least for the first 6 or so), they did feature some striking ladies.
From Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Lieutenant Ilia (portrayed by Persis Khambatta):

From Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, the other Lieutenant Saavik (portrayed by Robin Curtis):

And finally from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Romulan Caithlin Dar (portrayed by Cynthia Gouw):

(P.S. I'm taking nominations for future poll candidates and themes. I'm also thinking about giving the poll a summer hiatus, since it takes about an hour or two to put each one together. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Thanks!)
Results (Posted 17 May 2005):
Ilia: 16 of 57 votes for 28%
Saavik: 16 of 57 votes for 28%
Dar: 25 of 57 votes for 44% -- WINNER!

Hey John, I know it's not as easy, since it isn't visual, but what about babes from SF books? Who's hotter, DeeTee Burroughs, Melissa von Alderheim or Clarissa MacDougal, for example. Bonus points if you know who the author/book is!

How about a Whedonverse babe poll? You could take the winner of Firefly and put her against: Buffy, Cordie, Anya, and Fred.

The choice here's reaaal simple: It is time for total truth between us, so I choose Robin Curtis' Lieutenant Saavik. Bald is bad, and so is enough eye shadow to dwarf Katherine Harris' look. The only babe candidate in
TFF was the anonymous yeoman played by Melanie Shatner, if I remember right.
Since the blog's been busted for quite some time, there won't be a voter guide. Alas, the world weeps, I'm sure.
As for babes from sci-fi books, my money's on Shannon Foraker, at least the way Weber had her described as of the late 1990s.

Jeff: Check out the Gallery. Teri Garr won the December 7, 2004 weekly poll against Joan Collins. I've been thinking about a "best of" poll at some point, and that time may be rapidly approaching, so Teri might run again.

SF Babes Poll Quote-of-the-Month
I get a few regular commenters, whose input I really value (please keep it up, folks!). But I really love getting comments from readers I didn't even know I have (ahem), and "BadLiberal" left this great gem in the comments of
last week's SF Babe Poll pitting Lt. Marlena Moreau against Lt. Marla McGivers:
You've gotta be f'-in kidding.
One [sic] the one hand we have a woman who's slept her way to the top while incinerating entire planets, and on the other we have a woman who gets all googly eyed over fine Corinthian leather.
Lt. Moreau walks away with this one. Probably after leaving McGivers at the bottom of a convenient river.
Very nice generational joke there about "fine Corinthian leather" -- most people much younger than I wouldn't catch the reference. I couldn't have agreed more with the other sentiments and was quite pleased with the outcome of the poll. (And for what it's worth, note well that I included McGivers at the request of another so-far-one-time commenter, "Ishy.")
A neat thing that's showing up in some of the polls is how the personality attributes of the characters influence certain voters more than just surface appearances. That's how I usually vote and also why I try to make the poll pics purely of the characters "in character." The Gallery is where I sometimes feature more flattering pictures of the actresses "out of character."

No great surprise. Yet another one of the polls where you were obviously wrong.
McGivers was hot; I admire beautiful women who dig the superior intellect. The ability to incinerate planets is common in the sci-fi realm, but nobody on the Death Star made my lightsaber glow.
If ya know what I mean.

IIRC, McGivers (nice looking, for a redhead) was attracted to more than just the superior intellect; she was hungry for power, too, and the
will to power. She was taken in by the whole Nietzschean Uebermensch eugenics ethos of Khan and his sidekicks. I didn't leave much of a light-side/dark-side choice to my readers in that particular poll...
Normally, I like "good" characters, but sometimes the villainesses just have more
fun with their parts and make their characters more appealing.

OK, here is my second post for you.
Lt. Mcgivers has captured my imagination since I first saw the episode when I was about 10. I guess we share an attraction to history. Although for Lt. McGivers, it was much more... personal. I liked her because she was so much more of a developed character than Yeoman Rand. Personality wise, of course, but she did look good in the uniform. (nudge nudge, say no more)
I returned after reading your post over at the Llamabutchers. I thought I was the only fan of Rush's "Time Stand Still." Great tune.
I enjoy the site. Keep up the good work. I aprecaite your consideration of a first time poster.

SF Babes Weekly Poll (Is There A Point To This?)
Don't let the existentialist title fool you. There is a point to all of this. Oh yes, there is. A few points, in fact.
This week's poll was inspired by Rob at the Llamabutchers (see post here), who urged a write-in campaign for pointy-eared previous poll loser Lieutenant Saavik (of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan):

Interesting idea, I thought, to run another previous "loser": the sometimes pointy-hatted Princess Ardala (of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century) (who only "won" her earlier poll against Colonel Deering thanks to the machinations of a corrupt poll author):

Vote early and often (and for Ardala, of course).
Enjoy!
Results (Posted 10 May 2005):
Princess Ardala: 41 of 69 votes for 59% -- WINNER!
Lieutenant Saavik: 28 of 69 votes for 41%

Wow, I'm torn -- I voted against each of them their first time around. By the way, have you considered the babes of Dune, both the movie and the two SciFi miniseries?

Vote Ardala, then. Each day until next Tuesday.
Dune is a great idea! I have the miniseries on DVD, so I can make screen caps if I can't find good pics easily on the Internet. The miniseries version of Chani was nowhere near as exotically good-looking as the mental image I had of her when I read the book.
I hated the David Lynch version, and I can't remember who the actresses were, but maybe they can count as the only redeeming qualities of that monstrosity of a screen adaptation.

Ardala all the way!
Still, Princess Leia ..... of course that's too obvious.

Oh, very funny! Touche, indeed.

Of course, you had to go with the KA version of Saavik..... LOL

What about the other Saavik?

There is no justice! How can
Saavik be losing to a 1970s space princess other than Leia Organa? As for
Dune, I have some vague memory of Virginia Madsen's Irulan being a bit of a looker. (Admittedly, any movie with Patrick Stewart and the guy who played Jeffrey Pelt can't be all bad, can it? On the other hand, the Bene Gesserit, on the basis of screenshots, could induce vomiting.)
Bleh. The only explanation I can think of is that the electorate is being influenced by what Kirstie Alley became, instead of what she was in 1982. C'mon! Saavik didn't wind up in the sack with Admiral Kirk, unlike Ardala and Captain Rogers. Doesn't chaste character (at least until
Star Trek III) count for something?
