TANSTAAFL!

So these folks claimed to have invented a perpetual motion machine. And they invited the scientific world to validate their claims! Heck, they even were going to have a demo! Free energy! Rejoice!

Huh. It seems that the machine did not work in the demo "...due to excessive heat from the lighting in the main display area..."

Riiiiiiggggghhhhhtttttttt....

Folks, I suggest strongly that you keep your hands on your wallets.

Some commentary here and here.

Endurance Missions

It's an interesting time to be studying Mars. In addition to the orbital looks of the ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and 2001 Mars Odyssey (I'll have a writeup on these three in the future), we're still reaping the benefits from two other missions, both of which have lasted well past their "expiration dates."

(Update! The entry into Victoria Crater (see below) has been delayed due to a dust storm!) more...

Easy Travel to Other Planets

Can we travel to other planets? Will the expense (or the transit times or the awful aching black) overwhelm us? Charles Stross considers the concept of interplanetary and interstellar travel and colonization.

This has (naturally!) generated a lot of talk among fans of space travel, science fiction, etc. Here's an excellent entry from Centauri Dreams, Paul Glister's site. Check out his book!

Fifteen Quotes from Brian Greene

A clear night sky and a little instruction allows anyone to soar in mind and imagination to the farthest reaches of an enormous universe in which we are but a speck. And there is nothing more exhilarating and humbling than that.

A unified theory would put us at the doorstep of a vast universe of things that we could finally explore with precision. more...

What happens when you mix the reality of physics with fantasy (science fantasy, heroic fantasy, comic fantasy, take your pick!).
